Real De Catorce (1996)
Leaving Catorce, we retrace our route south through the desert, back into the state of Guanajuato, to another ancient mining town, Mineral de Pozos. Pozos, like Real de Catorce, was once an opulent colonial mining city of over fifty thousand inhabitants. Today, though the town has been declared an Historical National Monument, protecting its elegant adobe architecture and ancient mining buildings, there are only a few thousand inhabitants. The landscape around Pozos, with its air of history and its rolling hills, has been described as a Mexican Tuscany. The greatest attractions for photographers and artists are the mining buildings and the primal landscape in which they are set. Huge, old mesquite trees and bright wildflowers grow amidst the crumbling ruins. As the light changes throughout the day, new picture possibilities develop virtually every minute.
