Veracruz (2003)

2005 Workshop #3
Veracruz and Mineral de Pozos, Mexico

July 10 - 23, 2005

Photography Instructor: Geoff Winningham

This two-week workshop is designed to give participants the opportunity to explore two different geographical areas of great beauty and cultural interest in Mexico -- the Gulf Coast of southern Veracruz and the northern slopes of the Sierra Gorda mountain range in the state of Guanajuato -- while learning or refining their skills in color or black and white photography.

This group will meet in the Mexico City airport at 12:00 noon on July 10 and depart immediately on the five-hour drive to Veracruz. Four six days and nights we will explore and photograph the city of Veracruz, the Olmec cultural region and coastline just south of the city, and the stunningly beautiful region around the town of Catemaco, Veracruz.

The city of Veracruz is steeped in history. It was just north of here that the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes came ashore in 1517 and founded the first European settlement in the New World. The ruins of the original church he built can still be seen at La Antiqua, constructed of stone and coral reef. A few miles further to the north, just outside the tiny beach town of Villa Rica and high atop a mountain overlooking the Gulf, are the ruins of Quisquiapan, an early Totonac city. Tourists seem to be relatively few and far between, so these sites can be explored and photographed easily and without interruption.
